About Advanced Grouping

Advanced Grouping is a multi-level grouping method enabling Monitors to be grouped and viewed logically. Groups inherit the status of their components.

To define a group, you provide a name, type, and the type of member that the group contains. A group can contain only one type of member, such as Monitors. This enforces a logical use of the groups, and prevents problems caused by having groups of mixed type.

You can understand advanced grouping best by thinking about an example. Consider a standard way that a national company organizes its operations -– Region, State, and City.

  • Region is at the top of the hierarchy; regions are made up of states.
  • State is next in the hierarchy; states are made up of cities.
  • City is the lowest level of the hierarchy. Cities contain Monitors, which is what we're interested in tracking.
