Using the Windows Performance Counter Wizard
The Windows Performance Counter wizard can query Windows Performance Counter information from local or remote Windows systems to use in a Monitor. This wizard enables you to monitor system performance counters for memory, processes, services, disk, and so on.
The Windows Performance Counter wizard enables you to set up multiple Tests and Resources in a Monitor. You need to do this if you want to run the Test for this Monitor on the local computer (which is the same computer as the Reveille server) or on a remote computer.
To set-up multiple Tests and Resources in a Monitor using the Windows Performance Counter wizard, follow these steps:
- From the Add Monitor Tests Using Wizard dialog, select Windows Performance Counter and click OK. The Windows Performance Counter Wizard window appears.
- Click Next. The Monitor Setup wizard page appears.
- Under Web Server, enter the name of the Reveille Web server in order to set up the Windows Performance Counter Monitor.
- Under Query Performance Counters from, select Local Machine if you want to run your tests on the local computer. Go to Step 7.
-OR-
Select Remote Computer if you want to run your tests on the remote computer. Go to step 5. - Enter the name of the remote computer.
- Under Impersonation, use the current default credentials or select other credentials. The same credential must be on the server and the target system for impersonation to work.
- Click Next. The next page appears.
- Under Category, select the Windows performance counter category from the drop-down list. Only one category can be used per Test, but multiple Tests can be added to a Resource. (Help on Windows Performance Counters.)
- Select the check box next to Property by choosing the appropriate Entry to be used in this test. This populates Resource Name and Test Description. If you wish to add the Windows Performance Counter Test to an existing Resource, replace the Resource Name with the existing Resource Name.
- Under Comparison Test, make a selection to be used for Test comparison from the drop-down list.
- Select Output Metric to have the Test result saved as a Metric to use within scorecards. Select the Metric to either create a new Metric or use an existing Metric. Note: A Metric evaluation will override a Test comparison evaluation.
- Under Sample every, select the number of seconds to sample the performance counter. The Test result is a Windows calculated value over the sample period. The default sample interval is 1 second, the maximum sample interval is 60 seconds.
- Select Turn on Debug Messages if you want debug messages displayed.
- Select Auto-generate Resource Name to automatically generate the Resource Name based on the computer name.
- Select Run Test. The Windows Performance Counter Wizard Status dialog appears showing the Test status. The Windows Performance Counter Wizard Test Result dialog appears, giving the test result.
- Close the Windows Performance Counter Wizard Test Result dialog, and click Add Test.
- Click Next. The final wizard page appears. Click Finish.
The Left Navigational Pane shows the new Resource and Test.
